ASQ Toronto Presents: Going Beyond Lean Six Sigma and the Balanced Scorecard

 

January 18, 2011 updates - manager choice:

     It is my pleasure to welcome Forrest Breyfogle to our Lean Six Sigma Canada group.
Forrest Breyfogle is the founder (1992) and CEO of Smarter Solutions, Inc. (www.smartersolutions.com), and creator of the Integrated Enterprise Excellence system. He is a Professional Engineer, an ASQ Fellow, and serves on the board of advisors for the University of Texas Center for Performing Excellence.
   Forrest Breyfogle was honored for his cutting-edge approach to traditional Six Sigma methodologies in his book, Implementing Six Sigma, 2nd edition (ISS2) at the 2005 American Society for Quality (ASQ) World Conference. ISS2 referred by many as the "how to" book recommended by ASQ, and is now receiving the coveted Phillip B. Crosby Medal. This honor is presented to the individual who has authored a distinguished book contributing significantly to the extension of the philosophy and application of the principles, methods, or techniques of quality management.
   Forrest has authored or co-authored eleven books, published over 150+ technical articles for a wide range of publications, and has been interviewed by television, radio, and publication editors about managing the dynamics of organizations and the application of all forms of enterprise improvement methodologies

Tom Pyzdek It is my pleasure to welcome Thomas Pyzdek to our Lean Six Sigma Canada group. Tom Pyzdek is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading experts on quality. He has written over 50 copyrighted works, including such classics as The Six Sigma Handbook, The Quality Engineering Handbook, and The Handbook for Quality Management. Pyzdek's work is widely acclaimed for its ability to make the seemingly complex subject of process excellence understandable.
   Tom Pyzdek's works have been studied by hundreds of thousands in their preparation for various certification exams. He is also a skilled trainer, hired by industry leaders worldwide to aid in their process excellence programs.
   Tom Pyzdek was named “Outstanding writer and author” by The International Who’s Who in Quality and he received the Quality Progress Reader’s Choice award for his articles on the future of quality. He is also the 2008 recipient of the ASQ E.L. Grant Medal for outstanding contributions to quality education. Recipient of the ASQ Edward's Medal (1995) and the Simon Collier Quality Award (2004.) The latter two awards are for outstanding contributions to the field of quality management. These are among the most prestigious awards in the quality field.

Chet Marchwinski It is my pleasure to welcome Chet Marchwinski to our Lean Six Sigma Canada group. Chet Marchwinski is a very well respected, widely known professional in the Lean community and by everybody who recieves the weekly Lean Enterprise e-letter from lean.org. Chet is the Communications Director at the Lean Enterprise Institute, a nonprofit research, education, publishing, and conference company with a mission to advance lean thinking around the world.
  The Lean Enterprise Institute (LEI) was founded in 1997 by management expert James P. Womack, Ph.D., as a nonprofit research, education, publishing, and conferencing company with a mission to advance lean thinking around the world. Lean Enterprise Institute uses the surplus revenues from these activities to conduct research projects and support other lean initiatives such as the Lean Education Academic Network, the Lean Global Network and the Healthcare Value Leaders Network

Dr. Harry has been widely recognized and cited in many publications as the principal architect of Six Sigma and the world's leading authority within this field. His book entitled Six Sigma: The Breakthrough Management Strategy Revolutionizing the World's Top Corporations has been on the "best seller list" of the Wall Street Journal, Business Week, and Amazon.com. He has consulted many of the world’s top CEOs and has been a featured guest on such television programs as the NBC show "Power Lunch". In addition, he has been distinguished by Arizona State University with the 2002 Engineering Excellence Award for superb achievements in the engineering profession and notable contributions to society.

At the present time, Dr. Harry is President and COB of the Six Sigma Management Institute. As founder of the Six Sigma Academy in 1994, he served as a board member and chief executive officer.

As one of the original architects and pioneers of Six Sigma at Motorola, he was responsible for the research and development of advanced Six Sigma engineering models and methods. While serving the Motorola Government Electronics Group, Dr. Harry also held the positions of Member of Technical Staff, Group Operations. Before this, he held the position of Manager and Principal Staff Engineer, Advanced Quantitative Research Laboratory. He also served as a Quality and Reliability Engineer when he first joined Motorola.

Dr. Harry has over 50 major publications to his credit. His work has appeared in such journals as Quality Progress, IEEE Micro and Circuit World, Journal of Circuit Technology.




    It is my humble honour to welcome Mr. Masaaki Imai to our Lean Six Sigma Group.

Known as the “Lean Guru” and the father of Continuous Improvement (CI) Masaaki Imai has been a pioneer and leader in spreading the Kaizen philosophy all over the world.

His book, Kaizen: The Key to Japan’s Competitive Success (1986) was an instant global bestseller, firmly embedding the word Kaizen in the corporate lexicon. It was the first book to introduce the ‘LEAN’ philosophy to the world, four years before the book The Machine That Changed The World: The Story of Lean Production. His first-hand account is based on his close associations and travels with such corporate figures as Shoichiro Toyoda and Taichi Ohno and reveals the secrets behind the success of Toyota and other Japanese companies.

Mr. Imai’s sequel book on this subject Gemba Kaizen: A Commonsense, Low-cost Approach to Management was published in 1997. This book uses relevant case studies to detail 21 practical kaizen management practices that aim to achieve greater productivity, better quality and more profits with minimal cost and time.

The concept of kaizen is to make simple, common-sense improvements and refinements to critical end-to-end business processes - supporting the overall CI strategy of the organization. In the mid-eighties Mr. Imai brought this message to executives of the leading North American carmakers.

Today, companies around the world have used kaizen for greater productivity, speed, quality and profits with minimal cost, time and effort, to get results and to become recognized industry leaders.

Mr. Imai’s journey started in 1950 at age 20, taking Japanese managers on tours of American plants looking for the secrets of high productivity. In 1961, he returned to Japan and became the first corporate headhunter and consultant to major corporations striving for a competitive advantage. Twenty years later, the situation was reversed, with Mr. Imai receiving visitors from all over the world intent on seeking out the secrets of their Japanese trading partners- via Kaizen Tours (then known as Japan Study Tours).

Mr. Imai founded Kaizen Institute in 1985, also now known as Kaizen Institute Consulting Group (KICG). He continues to play a significant role as the Ambassador and visionary of the organization, while actively participating in conferences around the world spreading his message of KAIZEN LEAN. The Institute focuses on a top-down and bottom-up approach that engages the entire enterprise to create a Lean culture that is sustainable.
